The 2021 Canada Day plans in Stratford are going to look a lot like they did in 2020. With COVID-19 restrictions still in place, the Town of Stratford has been working on a Canada Day lineup that feels much like it did last year. The recent discoveries of children in unmarked graves on the grounds of former residential schools will also be acknowledged in the plans.

“Our residents, staff and my fellow council members are all feeling a strong mix of emotions this year,” said Stratford Mayor Steve Ogden. “We have discussed what the best course of action is for our community in light of these horrific findings, and after some conversation with representatives of the local Indigenous community, have decided to proceed. Our Canada Day activities have long been a time for us to show the diversity that makes up our wonderful community and we will use our platforms this year to provide information and resources to residents who wish to learn more about Indigenous peoples and use their time on Canada Day to reflect on our country’s past.”

Town staff are currently sourcing content which will be shared on the Town’s social media platforms throughout the day on July 1st. This information will be helpful for residents who are looking to expand their knowledge around the history of residential schools in Canada, and to use the day this year to grieve and mourn alongside our Mi’kmaq and Indigenous neighbours on PEI and across Canada.

“We understand that everyone will need to make their own personal choice as to what and how, or even if, they participate in Canada Day this year,” added Mayor Ogden. “For those that wish to feel a sense of community we will offer some activities for them, and those who wish to remain away from the activities this year, we respect and encourage them to do so as well.”

Other activities taking place in the Town of Stratford include:
• Stratford Trail Bingo – a self-directed activity locating nine animal images along trails in Stratford and recording the codes on a Stratford Trail Bingo card to submit for prize draws.
• Home Decorating – Residents are encouraged to decorate their homes and businesses, and submit a photo to the Town of Stratford for prizing opportunities.
• A Day in the Life of Stratford – A 24 hour chronicling of how Stratford residents spend July 1st. Residents are invited to submit photos of their activities, gatherings, etc. taking place from 12am – 12pm on July 1st. All entries received will be entered for prize draws.
• A free family bike ride begins at 9am at Fullerton’s Creek Conservation Park, ending at approx. 10am in the same location. All are welcome.
• ‘Celebrate Stratford’ motorcade leaves Stratford Town Centre on a designated route in Stratford beginning at 12pm. Residents are encouraged to come out along the motorcade route with signs to say thanks to our essential workers and all who have been doing their part to keep us safe and healthy. Noise, signs, flags, and of course lots of waving, is encouraged.
• Strawberry Social – For the second year in a row, residents will be able to participate in the strawberry and ice cream social with a drive-thru format. There is no cost for this activity and it runs from 2-3pm at Stratford Town Centre.

A Facebook event page has been created for residents to join and stay informed about all activities coming up for Canada Day in Stratford. Information will also be shared on all of the Town’s social media accounts as well as on the Town of Stratford website at www.townofstratford.ca, where residents can also find a copy of the Stratford Trail Bingo Card.
