| Historical Context: | In 1786, Alexander Mutch of New Macher Parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland arrived at Port La Joie, St. John's Island. He left Port La Joie in 1788 and settled at Fullerton's Creek (Mt. Herbert). Alexander Mutch was married twice and it was the fourth child from Alexander's second marriage, William (1811-1884), who settled in Southport. "The Brick House" was built in 1828, on a 200 acre farm by William Mutch, who became known as "Brickhouse William." William passed the farm on to his only son, Henry (1848-1911). Henry passed the farm on to his first son, Perley (1878-1911). Perley, in turn, passed the property on to his only son, Harry. Tired of the toils of a farmer's life, Harry sold the property to Richard MacKinnon in 1959. The house and property had been in the Mutch family for 130 years. The home was most recently purchased in 1993. |
