Launch of the Global Governance Project
Today the Town of Stratford launched a new initiative to improve governance locally, regionally and globally.
“In the Town Stratford in Prince Edward Island, Canada, we are trying to build a better governance system to improve the democratic decision making process” said Town of Stratford Mayor David Dunphy. “We have researched and adopted best practices in governance like strategic performance management, sustainability and community engagement because we believe that better governance is the path to a better community, which is our ultimate goal. “
Globalization is a fact. Economic, communication and transportation networks are global. The impact of human activity is global. What is not global is the current governance model of 195 independent nations and millions of corporations looking out for their own best interests. “A global approach to governance is necessary to coordinate human activity at the scale required to address regional and global issues and regulate global networks” commented Town of Stratford Chief Administrative Officer Robert Hughes.
“The path to a better world is a better global governance model. We have the knowledge and technology to develop an effective mechanism for people, legislators and governments to collaborate on decision making locally, regionally and globally” Mr. Hughes continued.
To deliver on the promise of better governance, the Town of Stratford has created the One Governance Foundation. The purpose of the foundation is to build a better global governance system, resulting in more democratic, sustainable, effective and efficient outcomes.
The One Governance Foundation is proposing a way, in five steps, to create a world where humanity lives in peace and harmony and takes no more than the planet can sustainably provide. The heart of the proposed global governance system is an internet enabled decision making platform that will allow citizens, experts and other stakeholders to advise their legislators and governments on decisions and enable governments to collaborate with one another on decisions for regional and global issues. Ultimately, it is designed to lead to a global constitution, with a human rights and earth charter, enforced via an independent judiciary and the rule of law. A global constitution is the mechanism through which humanity can sustain peace and harmony and restore balance to natural systems. The initiative is called the Global Governance Project.
“In five steps we can improve democratic decision making, restore honour and purpose to the role of elected officials and free governments to focus solely on the common good.” said Mr. Hughes.
Once it is created, the Town of Stratford will use the decision making platform to facilitate the democratic decision making process within the town.
“I have always said that politicians and citizens need a way to communicate with one another in between the door to door campaign visits every four years.” said Mayor Dunphy “I encourage legislators and governments everywhere to consider adopting the decision making platform to improve the democratic decision making process in their jurisdictions, and to join us to create a network of governments that share decision making on regional and global issues. “
The goal of the Global Governance Project is to encourage and inspire people and governments around the world to collaborate to design and build a better governance system. The success of the project will be measured by the number of people from around the world that participate in the effort to build a better global governance system.
The One Governance Foundation encourages people everywhere to join the Global Governance Project and help eliminate poverty, discrimination, inequality, terrorism, war, and the unsustainable assault on the planet.
