The composition, terms of reference and sub-committees for the Stratford Recreation Commission shall be as follows:

Composition

  •  a chair who shall be a member of Council;
  •  a vice-chair who shall be a member of Council;
  •  up to two (2) additional members who shall be members of  Council; and
  •  at least three (3) but not more than five (5) “at large" members who shall not be members of Council but who shall be residents of the Town.

Terms of Reference

  • to promote the social and physical well being of the residents of the Town;
  • to develop long range plans in conjunction with the Public Works & Property Committee for all public property owned by the Town;
  • to represent Town Council in matters relating to the planning, development, organizing, promoting, and administration of recreational programs, events and facilities;
  • to draft regulations and policy as they relate to recreation activities for the Town;
  • to address local, provincial, regional, and national issues that may have     a direct effect on the type, quality, and cost of recreational services provided to the residents of the Town;
  • to provide a forum and a coordinated means of communication between recreational organizations within The Town and Council; and
  • to prepare and submit to Council a proposed budget for each fiscal year.

Sub-committees

        The Committee shall establish, determine the membership of, and set the terms of reference for sub-committees as required.  There shall be at least two sub-committees as follows:

  •  Events committee
  •  Program committee
  • Arts and Culture Committee

Highlights of the Recreation Commission since almagamation in 1995.

  • In 1995 a risk management assessemnt was completed which resulted in the replacement of wooden structures and planned for an annual budget to upgrade parks and outfit new growth in neighbourhood parks.
  • In 1996 a Little Lequgue sized baseball field was constructed at MacNeill Park
  • In 1996 Stratford purchased the Tea Hill Park from the Province of PEI. This 11 acre parcel provides beach access and has porovided room for expansion with a volleyball site, and now a cricket pitch.
  • In 1998 Stratford purchased the Rober l. Cotton Memorial Park, known locaaly as Bunbury Nursery, this 17 acre park contains an arboretum and recreational trailsas well as space for youth groups, seniors activities and beautiful gardens.
  • In 1999 Stratford provided several acres of land in the business park to allow our soccer club to build 2 recreational fields.
  • In 2000 the first section of the Stratford Trail was built to connect Cotton Park to Glen Stewart School.
  • In 2001 Stratford partnered with the Province of PEI to create space for youth and seniors meeting rooms at the "Cotton Center".
  • In 2002 the soccer club completed construction of 2 additional fields in the outdoor soccer complex.
  • In 2002 Stratford constructed a multi-purpose Town Hall that includes a recreation center with 400ft running track, fuitness area, gymnasium, kitchen and stage.
  • In 2003 Stratford partners to support the Pownal Sports Center to provide skating opportunities.
  • In 2004 Stratford partners with CARI in suport of aquatic acitivities.
  • In 2005 the town resurfaces 2 gall fields with a new rock dust material to impmrove the playing surface.
  • In 2005 Stratford partners with the ECMA's in support of the arts.
