General Government
The General Government Department consists of the Chief Administrative Officer, the Sustainable Economic Development Coordinatorand the Administrative Support Clerk. The Chief Administrative Officer is responsible for the overall management of Town operations and the provision of policy advice to Council. In addition to overall administration, the following services to residents are the responsibility of this department:
Police Protection
Police Protection in the Town is provided via a contract with the RCMP. For emergencies call 911, for non-emergency services please call 368-9300. There are currently 6 officers assigned to police the Town of Stratford. S/Sgt M. G. Murphy is the Stratford supervisor The members enforce various federal and provincial statutes in the Town such as the Criminal Code and Highway Traffic Act. In addition, the members also enforce the Town’s Nuisance Bylaw.
A Policing Needs Study was contracted in 2007 and the reccomendation was for Stratford to continue contracting with the RCMP until 2012 when the current contract expires.
In addition, the RCMP work with various groups in the Town on crime prevention and conduct DARE (Drug Awareness and Resistance) training at Glen Stewart School.
Fire Protection
Fire Protection is provided through a contract with the Cross Roads Community Rural Fire Company located at 264 Mason Road at the intersection with the Trans Canada Highway. The Fire Company is a not-for-profit volunteer fire company which serves the Town of Stratford and the surrounding area; Wilf Jay serves as Fire Chief.

Emergency Measures
The Town of Stratford is responsible to plan for and coordinate the response to an emergency in the Town. The Town’s Emergency Measures Plan was redrafted in 2008 and will be reviewed each year to ensure the information in the plan is up to date.
Street Lighting
The Town rents street light fixtures from Maritime Electric. Council passed a Street Light Policy in 2006 to set the intensity and number of lights to meet light levels light levels for various vehicular and pedestrian situations based on the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America’s Street Lighting Guide.
If you wish to have a new street light or street lights installed in your neighbourhood, please submit a request in writing to the Chair of the Safety Services and Environment Committee to 234 Shakespeare Drive, Stratford C1B 2V8 or via email to rhughes@town.stratford.pe.ca
If you wish to have a street light repaired, please call Maritime Electric at 628-3799, and note that Maritime Electric will ask for a tag number from the pole on which the light is mounted.
Animal Control
The keeping, care and control of animals in the Town is regulated by the Animal Control Bylaw. The enforcement of the Animal Control Bylaw is contracted out to the P.E.I. Humane Society. The bylaw requires that companion animals are properly cared for and it also includes a list of animals that are not allowed to be kept in the Town or in certain areas of the Town. With respect to dogs, the bylaw requires the following:
∙ all dogs must be licensed annually which you can do at the Town offices at 234 Shakespeare Drive or at the P.E.I. Humane Society.
∙ all dogs must be leashed when not on the owner’s property.
∙ dog defecation must be removed immediately when not on the owner’s property.
∙ owners must obtain a kennel license if more than two dogs are kept in a household for boarding or breeding.
Citizens on Patrol
There is also a Stratford Citizen’s On Patrol (COP) program where community minded citizens assist the Stratford RCMP in crime prevention by being an extra set of “eyes & ears” in the community. The Stratford COP program started in October 2008 and is supported by the Town of Stratford and the RCMP. If you are interested in helping to make Stratford a safer community, please pick up an application form at the Stratford Town Centre, 234 Shakespeare Drive. COP Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older, must pass a criminal records check and must complete a two day training session. Sustainable Economic Development
Stratford is committed to moving forward on a path toward Sustainability and the community has articulated a shared vision for Economic Development in the future. Everyday decisions made by the town are guided by Stratford's Sustainability Decision Making Framework ,community capacity is increasing with the work done on area Watershed Management , and community Greenhouse Gas reduction targets and plans for action are developed in our Stratford in Action program.
