MacKenzie Produce

MacKenzie ProduceOne Saturday morning way back in 1992, Greg MacKenzie got a call from a friend asking if he would be able to lend a hand on their farm for the day. Greg agreed, having no idea that that one hard day’s work would be the start of a long and successful career in vegetable farming. Greg joined the farm’s team full time the following week, quickly working his way up from farm worker to farm manager. In 2003, Greg and his wife Tania took a big leap of faith: they decided to purchase the vegetable farm, and within two months they had sold their house and had moved onto the farm property, becoming proud Island farm owners.

The Mackenzie family grows 115 acres of a variety of vegetables, with their specialty being cabbage and cole crops. They also grow yellow, green and purple beans for the three local Sobeys stores. To add a little flavor to fall, they operate a roadside market from September 10th until October 31st, selling their delicious veggies, pumpkins, and gourds. They love to bring fun to the community with their famous round hay bales with characters painted on them, their sandbox for the kids to play in, and their “fun bus”, which is parked at their veggie stand for kids to go in and do awesome activities.

The green thumb doesn’t stop with Greg and Tania – they passed it on to their three children, Austin, Haley, and Gracie! Greg and Tania started growing pumpkins in 2006 to get their children involved in farming. They kids are quite the little entrepreneurs. They love pumpkin season because they get to connect with the community and sell to Islanders directly.

The MacKenzie family is passionate about supporting local. They believe that supporting local farmers is important because it puts money back into the community. Plus, the food is as real as it gets because it comes fresh from the fields!

Through the family’s hard work and huge vision, plus a little dirt, their success has grown as much as their beautiful Island veggies. They won Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers award and the Federation of Agriculture Awareness Award in recognition of their outstanding efforts in projecting a positive image of agriculture on Prince Edward Island. They are also profiled in the 2016 Federation of Agriculture calendar for the month of September. Now that’s something to be proud of!
