As part of our effort to build the best community possible, one of our goals is to develop a stronger local economy where more goods, services and meaningful employment are available locally.  A growing body of evidence suggests that the businesses most beneficial to a community are those that are independent and locally owned. Over the past few decades, the “Buy Local” movement has been growing and gaining momentum in many small and large communities across Canada.   We have identified “Buy Local” as one of the initiatives that we will undertake to help achieve our goal of strengthening the local economy.

We are committed to engaging our residents more deeply and meaningfully in decision making to ensure that we are reflecting the will of the residents and to help build a better community.  One of the tools that we are going to use is the “Citizen Reference Panel” which is, essentially, a group of 25 typical citizens and stakeholders who are given a task to complete.  The citizen reference panel will also engage other residents and stakeholders.  The idea is that increased collaboration with residents and stakeholders through the citizen reference panel process will lead to better solutions.

We are therefore going to establish a Citizen Reference Panel to make recommendations to Council on a “Buy Local” initiative.  We are asking you, or someone in your household, to please consider putting your name forward for consideration for this citizen reference panel.  We will employ statistical methods to select 20 residents and 5 business persons from among those that put their name forward, ensuring that there is a balance between gender and age on the panel.  The panel will meet on six Monday evenings on the following dates:

  • February 11
  • March 4
  • March 25
  • April 15
  • April 29
  • May 13

Help us to build the best community possible – go to www.surveymonkey.com/s/stratfordbuylocalpanel and put your name forward.  We hope to have hundreds of participants from which to choose.  If you are not selected for this opportunity, don’t worry as there will be plenty of opportunity for you to contribute to this topic during the process and/or to participate in future citizen reference panels.

Thank you for your attention and for considering this request!

Sincerely,

Mayor David Dunphy
