Stratford event recognizes International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

On Saturday, March 21, the Town of Stratford is hosting a Multicultural Fashion Show at the Stratford Town Centre from 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 noon. The event is being held in recognition of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

First established in 1966 and proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on March 21. Canada was one of the first countries in the world to support the UN declaration, thereby making a commitment to develop and promote universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all through the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

“It is extremely important for municipalities to collaborate with organizations such as the Canadian Coalition of Municipalities against Racism and Discrimination (CCMARD) to take a stand against discrimination. As Stratford continues to build a community where every person is respected and has the opportunity to reach their full potential, it is crucial we learn about and celebrate our diverse community through events such as this,” said acting Mayor Randy Cooper.

As a member of CCMARD, Stratford will commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination to support our commitment of creating a welcoming, diverse and inclusive community that is free from any forms of discrimination. March 21 also reminds us to raise our voices against discrimination by strengthening racial harmony and celebrating cultural diversity.

“The Multicultural Fashion Show will provide residents with an opportunity to enjoy a selection of vibrant and colorful fashion from cultures around the world. These will include traditional and modern clothing, with unique ancestry and heritage being displayed by models of all ages, gender and ethnicity,” said Thilak Tennekone, Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

During the Multicultural Fashion Show, ethno-cultural groups including Chinese, Sri Lankan, Scottish, Irish, Aboriginal, Pilipino, East Indian and many, many more will be sharing a part of their heritage and ethnic traditions through the display of traditional costumes.

We invite everyone to join us on March 21 from 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 no9on at the Stratford Town Centre for this free family-friendly event. Refreshments and snacks will be provided. For more information about this and other initiatives in the Town of Stratford please visit www.townofstratford.ca.
