Stratford Budget Community Participation

The Town of Stratford is currently working on its 2019-20 budget and we are looking for your input. Engaging residents and stakeholders in the decision making process is an important part of our effort to build the best community possible. As we develop the 2019-20 budget we want to know your opinion on spending priorities. Please let us know where you believe we need to spend more or less of your tax dollars.

To assist you in understanding where dollars are spent, the following is a list of services that the Town currently provides:

• public transit – $215,000
• sustainability – $62,000
• police protection (via contract with RCMP) – $852,000
• fire protection (via contract with Cross Roads Rural Community Fire Company) – $316,000
• street lighting – $225,000
• animal control (via a contract with the P.E.I. Humane Society) – $32,000
• sidewalks and trails – $607,000 fully funded by gas tax money funding
• municipal water supply and distribution – $653,000
• municipal sewer collection and treatment – $2,730,000
• beautification – $28,000
• unsightly property and nuisance regulation – $7,500
• recreation and wellness programs – $30,000
• cultural programs – $38,000
• special events – $23,000
• parks, sports fields, and playgrounds – $167,000
• heritage protection and preservation – $5,500
• Fullerton’s Creek Conservation Park – $212,000 fully funded by gas tax money
• Skatepark – $310,000 fully funded by gas tax money
• wages and benefits for the town and utility- $1,810,000
• technology – $139,000 ($57,800 funded through CWWF funding)
• debt repayment for town – $542,000
• debt repayment for utility – $845,000

The time period for written budget requests to be received closed on Monday, January 14. Presentations from the floor however will be included as part of our pre-budget consultation meeting will be held on January 16 at 7:00 pm. Presenters will have just a couple of minutes to make their request with further time at the meeting used to discuss Town expenses, current requests and to collect feedback from residents on the Town’s long-term priorites. Everyone is welcome to attend.

RESIDENTS: We are also looking for resident feedback to assist Council, during its mandate over the next four years. There will have to be decisions made about new capital and operating priorities to meet the needs of a rapidly growing community. To assist Council in this process please respond to the following three questions here. These will remain open until Friday, January 18 at 12 noon.
