Media Release: Stratford Town Council Meeting Summary (November 16, 2018)

For Immediate Release:  November 16, 2018

The following items were discussed at the regular monthly meeting of the Stratford Town Council.

Act of Reconciliation

The Town Council meeting began with reading the following statement: “We acknowledge that the land upon which we gather is the unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq, and we pay our respects to the Indigenous Mi’kmaq People of this territory; past, present and future.” This is the first time for the Stratford Town Council Meeting to begin in this manner with the intention to have it continued in the future.

Utility Loan Renewal

After receiving responses from four institutions on a 5 year term for the remaining portion of a loan amounting to $300,000, TD Bank was awarded the tender with the lowest rate offered at 3.48%.

Zoning and Development Bylaw

First reading of a new Zoning and Development Bylaw was approved. A full media release was prepared on this bylaw and can be found on our website at www.townofstratford.ca.

Board Member Appointment

As Councillor Keith MacLean, who served as the Town’s representative on the Federation of Prince Edward Island Municipalities (FPEIM Board), has not reoffered to serve another term on Council, Councillor Gail MacDonald was appointed to serve the remainder of the term through until the end of 2019.

Snow Removal Tenders

Two tenders for snow clearing services were awarded to MacRae’s Backhoe and Trucking as the low bidder on both. One tender is for Town sidewalks, trails, and walkways and the other is for properties owned by the Town, Stratford Utility, and Stratford Seniors Complex. The contract is for the calendar years 2018/2019 and 2019/2020, with the option to extend the contract for two additional seasons.

Kelly’s Pond Watershed Planning Committee Report

Council endorsed the report received from a sub-committee appointed by the Sustainability Committee to develop recommendations for the rehabilitation of the Kelly’s Pond watershed. The report is a compilation of previous work, which includes recommendations to reduce sediment and nutrient loading, additional vegetative cover and the rehabilitation of existing ponds and wetlands. The report was accepted in principle and will allow staff the ability to develop a more detailed work plan, public consultation plan, budget planning, and to explore funding opportunities for Council’s consideration in the future which will be completed in association with the Stratford and Area Watershed Improvement Group.
